Free Response: Something Like Fate by Susane Colosanti

          I am currently reading the book, Something Like Fate by Susane Colosanti. Erin is the best friend of Lani, and she had just returned from camp over the summer in Vermont in July and August. While she was away, her ex-boyfriend, Jason was left behind with Lani, who he really likes. During those two months, Lani and Jason have been going out together nonstop, then go ahead to dating. When Erin returned, Jason and Lani had planned to tell Erin that they have been going out. But they're both afraid to tell her; what will she think? That Lani, her best friend, stole her boyfriend? 

          Jason and Lani are very happy together. When Jason was going out with Erin, they did not have as much fun as he and Lani did. They barely had anything in common, did not have much to talk about and were just complete opposites. When Erin introduced Jason to Lani, there was chemistry right away. After probably the first time talking to Lani, Jason immediately wanted to see her again. Until he fell in love with her after seeing her constantly. Erin had no idea anything was going on between Lani and Jason. But she soon found out. When Jason sent her a letter while she was in Vermont.

          Erin finds out about her ex, Jason and her best friend, Lani dating after Jason sends her a letter while she's gone. Once Erin returned, everything went downhill. Lani receives the first phone call from Erin ever since she left, 2 months before. Lani was excited to finally speak to her, but Erin was not. Erin talks all about how she thinks Lani is a 'liar' and even mentions a few cuss words. Lani does not believe what she's hearing, especially from her best friend, who she had just lost. But, she blames herself for going out with Jason in the first place. But, they love each other, they can't just end things to save a friendship and make Jason AND Lani disappointed. Erin was also angry with Jason, but more at Lani, since she blames her for 'stealing her boyfriend'. Lani is calm, she understands her anger, so she accepts the fact that she had just lost her best friend, who she knew since elementary school, for a loooong time.

         In conclusion, I am excited to find out what happens after the phone call. I would really like to know how Jason will handle this friendship problem between Lani and Erin. I'm also excited to find out how much time Erin spends away from her best friend, and if she will forgive her anytime soon.
